My eclectic taste in pop music both back in the 70's and now, includes a mushy ballad every now and again, and there was a panoply of male crooners that were ever present in the pop world in the 1970's: Tom Jones, Tony Christie, Paul Anka, Al Martino, Joe Dolan just to name a few. Engelbert Humperdinck born Arnold George Dorsey, was one of the most prominent, his name being just one ingredient to his success! By 1977 his run of hits had ended, but for this beautiful love song which surprisingly was not a hit in his British homeland, but a huge success in America, and Australia, where I recall enjoying its sentimental charms in the first part of 1977. Although i loved quintessential pop music - pop/rock/disco/soul, the nostalgic ballad held my attention, if it was catchy enough - and schmaltzy enough! In Australia, "After the Lovin'" entered the Top 100 this week, 35 years ago and spent five months in the Top 40, reaching the Top 10. It remains one of my favourite of its type - having enjoyed similar styled tunes as "To the door of the sun" (Al Martino), "Feelings" (Morris Albert), "No Regrets" (The Walker Brothers), and "Love me love my dog" (Pete Shelley). The rise of disco and punk and heavier rock sounds virtually wiped the balladeers - certainly the male ones, off the map - and artists such as Tom Jones and Paul Anka having to reinvent themselves to stay afloat.
