I think a lot of Van Halen's music could be construed as heavy metal. A lot of it can't be construed as any specific kind of music except power rock or what we call big rock. In essence, that's high velocity music, there's a lot of storm and thunder, a lot of sturm und drang. And you use volume as a tool to drive out the evil spirits. And people construe this as 'well, it's so loud that it has to be heavy metal'. But I see a lot of these categories as being based mostly on haircuts and shoes. Well my haircut's right for heavy metal but maybe my shoes are all wrong. I think what you have, there's an old japanese axiom, an old japanese saying that says 'two of the most opposites extremes become the same thing sooner or later'. I don't know if they said 'sonner or later', that doesn't sound so japanese to me either. But you know you get the gist of it. And what it means, in terms of Van Halen, in the context of this band and my schtick especially, is that a lot of people are looking at the same characters and seeing vastly two different things. A lot of people look at Dave Roth and they say 'oh, what a fob, oh man, what a wish-wash, no way he's getting into the bar'. And on the other hand, you got the guys with the leather up to their tush and they talk like this. And they say 'yeah, that's Dave, that's our hero'. And they put it up on the banner. I even turned down a date with a very nice boy who wanted to come see me at 4. I looked at him like he had 3 heads and told him no way, Oprah would be on. I have no idea where that guy is today but I am a better person for seeing the Oprah Show. Don't get me wrong, I did a little dirt in college. My friends and I would take road trips to other schools in the SWAC. We also went to clubs and partied with the fraternities after games or a random thursday and stagger in late at night. We also loved to party with a non-Greek group called MFWC. We knew NOT the drink their punch and definitely not the Que or the Kappa punch. Sometimes we made a 9 am class on Friday and sometimes we didn't. Not everyone had a car so sometimes we skipped Friday afternoon classes in order to catch a ride home early. Because I went to Alcorn on an academic scholarship, I was supposed to maintain a 3.0 Grade Point average, After my sophomore year, I ended up with a 2.99 and lost my scholarship! The following year, I ended up having work study in the campus library.
