Tags: NBA Cleveland Cavaliers Cavs New Jersey Nets game play James Varejao VC Carter Hayes moves slam dunk jam 3pt shot pass steal crossover
CLEVELAND, March 25,2009(AP) -- LeBron James sensed something special about this Cleveland team from the outset. He liked the talent, the chemistry, the vibe. Months later, his instincts were correct. These Cavaliers are like no others. James scored 22 points with 11 assists and made all the right moves in the closing minutes as the too-tough-at-home Cavaliers set a franchise record with their 58th win - and 10th straight - by beating the New Jersey Nets 98-87 on Wednesday night. "I could tell that we were going to be really good,'' James said. "I knew we could make this into something special - and we've been able to do that.'' With 11 games left in the regular season, the Cavs already have surpassed the club mark of 57 wins shared by the 1988-89 and 1991-92 teams, when Brad Daugherty, Mark Price and Co. could beat anyone in the Eastern Conference except Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls. Cleveland, which trailed 82-81 with less than four minutes left, also improved to an NBA-best 33-1 at home, 13-1 in March and 18-2 since the All-Star break. The Cavaliers, now five games ahead of Boston in the East, scored on their last 10 possessions and did not commit a turnover in the final 8:55. James has been asked so many times about Cleveland's run of records, that he has begun to sound like a broken one. "It seems like I've been saying the same speech a lot,'' James said. "We should all be proud as a franchise. I have no problem answering the same question when we're breaking ...

Tags: NBA New Jersey Nets Miami Heat game play Douglas-Roberts Hayes VC Wade Beasley moves slam dunk jam 3pt shot reverse pass steal crossover
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ, March 20,2009(AP) -- After a rookie season spent mostly on the bench, Chris Douglas-Roberts is taking full advantage of the shoulder injury that sidelined New Jersey Nets All-Star guard Devin Harris indefinitely. Douglas-Roberts capped a career-high 18-point performance with a game-clinching 3-pointer and the Nets spoiled the return of NBA leading scorer Dwyane Wade to the Miami lineup after a one-game absence with a 96-88 victory over the Heat on Friday night. "He is just seizing the moment,'' Vince Carter (17 points, nine rebounds and eight assists) said of Douglas-Roberts. "Now he is locked in. One thing I told and we didn't talk much. All I said was: 'Here is your opportunity, take advantage and make the best of it.''' Douglas-Roberts, who got Memphis within seconds of a national title last season, certainly taken advantage since Harris went down with sprained left shoulder last Sunday. Douglas-Roberts had a career-best 14 points in a win over the Knicks on Wednesday and he topped that against Wade and company. He had nine points in the second quarter in helping New Jersey take a 12-point halftime lead, and he added four points in a 9-0 fourth-quarter spurt that snapped a tie and gave the Nets an 82-73 lead. His first NBA 3-pointer with 1:10 to go iced the game and gave New Jersey its first win over Miami in four games this season. While he has had up and downs appearing in only 30 games this season, Douglas-Roberts never stopped working. "If your ...

Tags: NBA New York Knicks Jersey Nets game play Harrington Robinson Carter Lopez moves slam dunk jam 3pt shot crossover block pass steal
NEW YORK, March 19,2009(AP) -- Vince Carter played as if he plans to keep the Nets in the playoff race even without his All-Star sidekick. The Knicks looked like a team destined to spend another postseason at home. Carter scored 29 points and the Nets salvaged the final game of their otherwise miserable five-game trip with a 115-89 victory over New York on Wednesday night. "I feel more in a groove,'' Carter said. "This is the best part of the year, whether you're in first or you're fighting for the seventh or eighth spot. This is what it's all about.'' Brook Lopez added 23 points for the Nets, who put up 70 points across the middle two quarters, making 16 of 22 shots (73 percent) in the third, and cruised to a surprisingly easy victory in a game between teams fighting desperately to stay in the playoff race. "This is what we're going to need, for everyone to take their game to another level because our margin for error is smaller,'' Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. The Nets lost the first four games of the trip out West, losing All-Star point guard Devin Harris to a sprained left shoulder along the way. They didn't miss him on this night, shooting 59 percent and getting 17 points from his replacement, Keyon Dooling. "Our game is a game of injuries. It's a game of timing and all that,'' Dooling said. "With that being said, we just have to step up.'' Al Harrington scored 21 points, and Nate Robinson had 18 points for the Knicks, who went 3-2 on their trip and were opening a ...
