Mazinger Z (マジンガーZ majingā zetto?) es un manga y anime creado por Gō Nagai sobre un epónimo robot gigante que lucha contra las fuerzas malignas de su enemigo, el Dr. Hell. La serie de manga Mazinger Z pertenece al género mecha (se pronuncia meca) por estar dedicada a un personaje mecánico (mecha, diminutivo de mechanical en inglés). El manga se publicó por primera vez el 12 de septiembre de 1972 en el número 42 del semanario Shōnen Jump editado por Shueisha1 de la editorial Shueisha, consolidando su publicación semanal, hasta el número número #35 del año 1973. Tras publicarse el último número Mazinger Z fue publicado en la revista Tv Magacine de la editorial Kodansha.2 Fue entonces cuando se decidió que las aventuras de Mazinger Z fueran publicadas en 3 tomos separados (tankoubons) de alrededor de 300 páginas ya que el manga completo consta de 1021 páginas en total.3 Mazinger Z se estrenó en el canal Fuji Tv el 3 de diciembre de 1972.4 La serie se reeditó en un nuevo manga que incluía muchas novedades en la historia, creado por el tandem de dibujantes Go nagai y Ota publicado en la revista Boken O de la editorial Akita Shoten.5 Esta edición conto con la colaboración de 6 dibujantes es sus dos últimos números, que aportaron su personal visión del personaje, entre ellos cabe mencionar a Ippongi Bang! y Hiroshi Yakumo.
