Jim Davis starred as "railroad detective" Matt Clark in this 30-minute 1954 western series. Matt Clark's partner was a sexy, feisty, competitive young woman played by Mary Castle. Matt Clark eventually got a new partner played by Kristine Miller. A female lead in an action show was never done, and it was intriguing and fun. Its surprising no show followed this innovative precedent of a male and female duo as leads. Each episode of "Stories of the Century" focused on a different real life western desperado. This program was one of the first syndicated shows to win a major Emmy award. It was named the best western or adventure series of 1954. The lyrics were written by Giovanni Capurro and the melody was composed by Eduardo di Capua. It has been performed and covered by many artists, including such stalwarts of opera as Enrico Caruso, Beniamino Gigli, Mario Lanza, The Canadian Tenors and The Three Tenors. It has also been performed by rock/pop artists such as Anna Oxa, Bryan Adams, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Vitas (who sings it in a high countertenor range), Al Bano, Elvis Presley ("It's Now or Never") and most recently[when?] Erasure's Andy Bell in TV show Popstar to Operastar. Luciano Pavarotti won the 1980 Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Performance for his rendition of "'O Sole Mio." Though there are versions in other languages, "'O sole mio" is usually sung in the original Neapolitan language. 'O sole mio is the Neapolitan equivalent of standard Italian Il sole mio and translates literally as "my sun" (not "Oh, my sun").
