For this episode we travelled to Maumbury rings in Dorchester. The ditch was created by digging a series of funnel-shaped shafts, each 10 metres deep, which were so closely positioned as to create a continuous trench. Human and deer skull fragments were found in the ditch fill when it was excavated in the early 20th century. During the Civil War the site was again reused as an artillery fort guarding the southern approach to Dorchester. The site as it exists today is a product of the remodelling during this era - the most significant modification was the large ramp opposite the entrance. Its amphitheatre role was briefly revived in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, as a place of public execution. In 1685, at the close of the Monmouth Rebellion, Judge Jeffreys ordered eighty of the rebels to be executed here. In 1705 Mary Channing, a nineteen year old woman found guilty of poisoning her husband, was executed by strangulation and burning at the Rings. Thomas Hardy used this event in his poem The Mock Wife, and recorded some details of his research into the event in his personal writings. Due to the amount of horrific deaths that have taken place at Maumbury rings, it comes to no surprise that it's reputed to be one of the most haunted sites in Dorchester. Winchester Castle is a medieval building in Hampshire, England. This castle ws built in 1067 within the year of the Norman conquest. It was one of the greatest strongholds in England. For over a century it served as a seat of goverment before that position was taken by London. Only the great hall exists now which houses a museum of the history of Winchester. Many people have reported in what they believe they saw was paranormal activity such as figures wallking through the walls. Why are people witnessing the same thing? Is there really a spirit here that can not rest and may have a message to tell us? The Great Hall is also the home of king Arthurs round table though the table is probably a fake made after his death. www.dorsetghostinvestigators.com St Andews church in Kinson is the oldest Church in Bournemouth. Kinson is also the home of many smugglers. The area was historically used by the smuggler Isaac Gulliver whose men would carry the contraband up from The Chines in Poole Bay and take it across Cranborne Chase to be distributed to patrons all over Southern England. Gulliver had several properties in the area; however, all of the contraband were stored in the tower of St Andrew's Church (the marks of the ropes used to haul it up can still be seen in the soft sandstone walls of the tower) and in several stone graves in the churchyard which were constructed for this purpose and never saw a coffin. Also in the churchyard is the grave of one Robert Trotman, who was killed when trying to land contraband on the shore near Poole. Smugglers at the time were regarded by some as folk heroes, as they circumvented high government taxes on goods such as alcohol, tobacco, etc. The presence of this grave openly in the churchyard, with its rhyming elegy to the deceased, is an interesting comment on the social status at the time of people who were technically criminals. Some have reported in hearing weird noises such as footsteps, but when they look back theres nothing there. Some of the locals believe that some of the smugglers are still here haunting the underground tunnels, so now we're going to investigate and find out if St Andrews Church is really haunted. The Comic Strip is a group of British comedians, known for their television series The Comic Strip Presents.... The core members are Adrian Edmondson, Dawn French, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer, Peter Richardson and Jennifer Saunders, with frequent appearances by Keith Allen, Robbie Coltrane and others. Five Go Mad in Dorset was the first of the long-running series of Comic Strip Presents... television comedy films. It first aired on the launch night of Channel 4 (2 November 1982), and was written by Peter Richardson and Pete Richens, and directed by Bob Spiers. The film is an extreme parody of Enid Blyton's Famous Five books, in which the titular Five — children Julian (Richardson), Dick (Adrian Edmondson), George (Dawn French), Anne (Jennifer Saunders) and their dog Timmy — investigate the disappearance of their Uncle Quentin (Ronald Allen). Daniel Peacock and Robbie Coltrane also made appearances, the latter in his first television role.
