This is my review on Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder. It is the first book in the Healer (or Avry of Kazan) Series. Here is my Q&A with Maria V. Snyder 1.Who is your favourite character in your books? Janco from my Study and Glass books is my favourite -- no doubt! He's just a fun, quirky character that goes off on unusual tangents and I love writing about him. 2. I loved Inside Out and Outside In! Are you going to balance it out by making a third book in that series? I'm glad you enjoyed the books. Right now there are no plans for a third. However, I've been getting many reader emails asking about a third. Plus my daughter wants another :) So I'm thinking there will be a third at some point, but I don't know when. 3. What gave you the idea for your new Healer Series? In my first fantasy series, the main protagonist, Yelena was able to heal, but it was only one of her many abilities. I wanted to explore this magical power more in depth. So I had this vague idea about a healer or an apprentice healer during an epidemic. She was either going to be sought after for her powers -- like everyone wanting her, or be hunted. I wasn't sure. Then one night my daughter couldn't sleep and she wanted me to tell her a story. She knew all my other books, so I started telling her about this healer. And every night, she'd ask, "What's next?" That's why Touch of Power is dedicated to my daughter. 4. What book(s) are working on at the moment? I'm working on Scent of Magic, the second book ...

A while ago I promised myself I was not going to blog about Sarah Palin. Why feed her bottomless ego? I thought. Why give more ink to an airhead? Even when she invaded my turf in LA before the Academy Awards I didn't blink. Even when she and her entourage brazenly crashed a celebrity event and then filched some expensive swag, I shrugged. So, what else is new? It just seemed like more of the same from the opportunistic Wasilla mom who's been cashing in on her fame since she first discovered designer clothes and became an accidental darling of the right. But now Palin's done something so patently outrageous I can't be silent, much as I'd like. And I don't mean the mind-boggling deal she struck with Discovery Channel for a "documentary" series about Alaska on TLC. Though having spent time there in my youth, I do find the idea strangely intriguing. First off, this is the same cable channel that gave us those paragons of good parenting, Jon and Kate Gosselin. So can we be clear about Palin's new gig? We're talking reality TV here, people. We have many fine programs that can accurately be called documentary series. Frontline is one. The acclaimed, meticulously produced Life is another. But Palin's Alaska will doubtless not be winning any Emmys in the documentary category. Beyond semantics, what were the folks at Discovery Channel thinking? Did anyone there consider the irony of hiring a woman to host a "nature" show who disdains nature? He reportedly got the new ink in December, but the star kept it quite covered through the cold winter months. Alas, the tattoo on his left leg got revealed at a recent beach outing in Los Angeles. A portrait of Jesus Christ covers JB's calf. In fact, the singer already has the name of Jesus in Hebrew tattooed on his rib cage -- just like his dad who happened to be present for the big public reveal. Now we can just assume that Justin's tattoos are real, but remember back when he started getting ink and no one could at first tell if they were real or fake -- like the bird and that star??
