Palácio Real, Sintra National Palace, that was built on the remains of a Moorish castle. The Moors, who ruled here for centuries, were finally driven away from their paradise by King Alfons Henriques in 1147. The palace was built in the late 15th century to serve as summer accommodation for many a prince and ruler, who all had one thing in common: eternal glory. The palace rooms can be visited but conditions are strict. The armoury (Sala dos Brasões), the room with the Moorish tiles, the magpie room (Sala das Pegas), the swan room (Sala dos Cisnes), the bathhouse and many more beautiful things are visited annually by hundreds of thousands of tourists and culture lovers. The many rooms, niches, courtyards and corridors take the visitor back in time. Nothing remains hidden, even the bedroom hosts public art. The magpie room is quite a different story: the 136 magpies on the ceiling symbolise the chattering of the ladies-in-waiting of olden times.
