DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Broadcast March 18, 1954 A truck kills an old lady and her little grandson at a crossing and drives away. The owner of the truck asserts that he let a man called Paul borrow the truck for one hour, but he doesn't know the last name of this man or where he lives. The police must investigate all circumstances, but should Friday and Smith really spend lots of resources on trying to find a man they hardly believe exists at all? Dragnet, syndicated as Badge 714, is a radio and television crime drama about the cases of a dedicated Los Angeles police detective, Sergeant Joe Friday, and his partners. The show takes its name from an actual police term, a "dragnet", meaning a system of coordinated measures for apprehending criminals or suspects. When television was interested in Dragnet, Webb bucked the prevailing wisdom which argued that radio staff could not adapt to the new medium. He insisted on hiring actors, writers, and production staff from radio as much as was feasible to work on the television version. This loyalty would endear Webb to many of his Dragnet colleagues for decades to come. The pilot for Dragnet, "The Human Bomb" (adapted from the July 21, 1949 radio episode), aired on television on December 16, 1951 as a special presentation of the NBC program Chesterfield Sound-Off Time. It introduced the many close-ups that became Webb's trademark. After the pilot's success, the regular series debuted in January 1952. Friday's ...

Kelly Lester is an actress, singer and "juggler": During the last two decades she has also been an entrepreneur, wife, and mother of three. A graduate of UCLA's theatre department, Kelly has appeared in dozens of plays and musicals in the Los Angeles area and on the east coast. Early work includes The Fantasticks opposite Tony-award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell and Grease, directed by Tony-award nominee Scott Ellis and choreographed by Tony-award winner Susan Stroman. Kelly left show business for almost twelve years to run her own highly-successful gift manufacturing business and raise her three young daughters. Her handcrafted home décor items were sold in hundreds of museum stores across the country. After selling that business in 2006, Kelly defied the old adage that 'there are no second acts'. Since returning to performing, she has appeared in a number of films, TV shows, commercials, and stage productions. Kelly appears with symphony orchestras as a guest soloist (most recently in an evening devoted to the music of Richard Rodgers) and has played lead roles in world premieres of a number of new musicals. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to obscure musicals and has an obsession with graphic design (especially fonts). When not ...
