1976 (Two classic song/dance numbers from 'Chicago - The Musical' are performed by Shirley Bassey and her dancers during her 1976 TV Variety Show. These numbers bring Shirley back to her roots as she started show business as a Chorus Girl back in 1953. Soon afterwards, her producers discovered her voice, and very quickly she was moved out in front and for the most part her Dancing days were numbered. Soon afterwards she set out for a solo singing career. Shirley's first Number 1 hit, 'As I Love You' was achieved just five years later in 1958, but when you are working 2-3 shows a night in dives just to earn enough pocket change for food, those 5 years seemed like an eternity for Shirley. ABOUT the Musical, Chicago: Chicago is a Kander and Ebb musical set in Prohibition-era Chicago. The music is by John Kander with lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, and the concept of the "celebrity criminal". The musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she reported on. The original Broadway production opened June 3, 1975 at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 936 performances.
