So. although Pisa is known worldwide for its Leaning Tower (the bell tower of the city's cathedral), the city of over 88000, 200000 with the metropolitan area contains more than 20 other historic churches, several palaces and various bridges across the River Arno. The city is also home of the University of Pisa, which has a history going back to the 12th century. This church was mentioned for the first time in 1211, while the current building dates back to between 1251 and 1300. It's facade decorated with with and grey marble was completed in 1326. The Palazzo della Carovana, Palace of the Convey was built at the end of the 15th century, based on a design by Giorgio Vasari. It was first conceived as a headquarters for the knights of Saint Stephen. Vasari designed the entire facade which features metaphorical figures, some of which represent signs of the zodiac.
