Republican politicians in the United States are fighting President Barack Obama's decision to reject a controversial pipeline project. They are trying to strip the president of his authority to decide the fate of the Keystone oil pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada through the United States to the Gulf of Mexico. Republicans say Obama made the decision based on political considerations, and that the project would create thousands of jobs. Democrats, however, argue that a full environmental assessment must be carried out before the deal can be approved. Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reports from Washington, DC, the US capital.

www.brasschecktv.com NEW YORK -- Al Jazeera's English-language channel is hoping its coverage of the protests in Egypt will give it a new chance to win carriage by US cable and satellite TV operators. The Qatar-based news service has been largely shut out of the US market, the New York Times and New York Post reported Tuesday. Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and DirecTV do not currently carry Al Jazeera English, while Dish Network carries Al Jazeera Arabic and Al Jazeera Sports, but not the English-language channel, the Post said. "There is no question they are viewed as a trusted source by the people...all over the world," one unnamed network news head told the Post. "But there's clearly been suspicions in the government about what their true motivations might be. I think this might be a time to re-examine that." Al Jazeera said traffic to its Web site has jumped 2500 percent since the protests in Egypt started, with more than 50 percent of the increase coming from the US The site's live coverage stream has garnered more than 1.6 million views in the US, according to the Times. "Conversations with distributors in the US are ongoing," said an Al Jazeera spokeswoman. "This remains a priority market for us and we're hopeful that the high numbers of people in the US watching us online will be an indication to cable operators that there is a strong demand for the channel." "I sincerely hope now is the turning point," Al Anstey, the managing director of Al Jazeera ...

They claimed that the so-called "Syrian Revolution" is a civil, peaceful and democratic revolution. However their slogans are quite the opposite. They salute sheikhs who promote hatred such as Adnan Al-Arour and Al-Qardawi. Not only this they chanted many slogans expressing the ultimate hatred against the other sects. Sometimes they want to expel these sects from Syria, other times they even want to annihilate these sects. The idiots also saluted the Wahhabi Wisal TV in a demonstration in Idleb... Damien Kingsbury, professor of international relations at Deakin University, talked to Al Jazeera from Melbourne, Australia, about the troop mutiny in Papua New Guinea. He termed the development as "a likely a countercoup". "There is tense and uncertain situation," Kingsbury said. "There is no external mediation, no neutral party at the moment, and unless both sides step back from current position there is very good chance it will lead to conflict in the near future."

Dozens of babies have died in the past two weeks at a hospital in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal. The latest deaths in the district of Malda come after reports of 25 babies dying in a six-day period in November at the same facility. State health officials blame social issues for the deaths, Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports from Malda. They say almost all the children were either underweight at birth, or that they were in critical condition when they arrived. Mothers in the region are having children as early as the age of 12 or 13 years old, the government says. Warning: the pictures in this report may disturb some viewers.
