Mary-Jane du Toit is a 30-year-old working mother of two daughters who lives in Isando in the Gauteng Province. It all started when Mary-Jane felt pain in her breast that became worse over the course of four days. She was told that she was too young for a mammogram, so instead, a sonar was done to check what was wrong. The doctors picked up the problem, did a biopsy and three days later she was told that she had breast cancer. Mary-Jane's diagnosis came as a huge shock to her and made her feel like she had just been handed a death sentence. She says her parents were the ones who took it the worst as there is no family history of breast cancer and everyone was wondering how this could have happened. The chemo is administered via a drip, explains Mary-Jane. The first four treatments were what they call "the red chemo" which many say is the worst of all -- two weeks after receiving it your hair starts to fall out. According to Mary-Jane, the "red chemo" makes one very ill and some people are bed ridden for two weeks. After the completion of the first round of chemo, 16 sessions of "white chemo" followed (which she had to receive every week on a Friday). Mary-Jane's hair started growing back and felt her body return to normal. Mary-Jane had a mastectomy done, as the cancer in her breast was very aggressive. Watch more at www.marksandspencer.com We are going to talk a little bit about womens breast surgery and we're going to talk about bra solutions for post-surgery. Straight after surgery the hospital and the nurses tell you that you have to wear bras that aren't underwired and bras that are very supportive so they are almost like sports bras. When it's settled down and the swelling's gone down and the scarring isn't so sore then you can start wearing more normal bras. It takes about 6 weeks to settle down because of the swelling. We have a comfort bra, which is good for all women as some ladies, are going to have some scarring that comes all the way round and so really important you get the side looking nice and flat. So when you try a bra on take just a little bit extra time to put it on properly and really place yourself into that bra. Place it underneath the breast root and then all the way round. A lot of ladies are going to have scar tissue from any reconstruction through the back so therefore you've got to make sure the bra doesn't actually rub in any area near the scarring. There will be some ladies that don't have reconstruction so they will end up wearing the prosthesis, which is obviously the artificial breast and that has quite a bit of wait to it and therefore the bra needs to do a job and support you. So we include pockets in all of our bras for post-surgery so the prosthesis can sit inside. This is another bra option that we do. This one has got the modesty ...
