Excellence Begins With Me is a video series that highlights the people, programs and services that positively impact the Tempe Elementary School District. "It is our mission to recognize the excellence that is on display each and every day in the Tempe Elementary community," said Superintendent Chris Busch. "I am proud to showcase these extraordinary people who commit themselves to the highest levels of excellence." A new video is produced for each Governing Board meeting starting in January 2012. Laura Mendralla Kathy Gannon, 6th Grade Math Teachers at Gililland Middle School Laura and Kathy are fantastic examples of excellence at Gililland Middle School. They both work tremendously hard ensuring success and academic achievement in every student. These two creative teachers put in many extra hours during the summer and throughout the school year to personalize their instruction to fit the needs of their students. They use a variety of classroom engagement strategies to keep students motivated to learn math. "We teach math the way we would've liked to learn math," said Mendralla. "You know, everybody remembers the lyrics to your favorite song, so why not incorporate mathematical concepts into songs, have them move their hands, use both sides of their brain." The result of their desire to excel is impressive ? in the fall of 2010, only 24 percent of their students met the math proficiency level on the Northwest Evaluation Association's (NWEA) testing measure.
