2012 Nascar Hall of Fame It was a night to honor some of NASCAR's most famous names, a group which formed the cornerstone of the on-track success that propelled NASCAR into the national spotlight. Darrell Waltrip, Cale Yarborough, Richie Evans, Dale Inman and Glen Wood - either as owner, driver or crew chief - account for more than 535 victories in what is now the Sprint Cup Series. Their accomplishments stretch from the first days of NASCAR to the present and, each has left an indelible mark on the sport to which they have devoted their lives to. Friday night, the five men became the most recent inductees into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, which opened in uptown Charlotte in 2010. "The kind of numbers and kind of performances that all five of our recipients tonight show you that at any given moment of their career, they were the best at what they were doing," NASCAR chairman Brian France said. Waltrip won 84 races, 59 poles and three Cup titles. Inman won eight Cup titles as a crew chief, including seven with his cousin Richard "The King" Petty, who was part of the Hall's inaugural class. Yarborough was the first driver to win three consecutive championships. Wood won four races as a driver and 98 as a car owner with Wood Brothers Racing. Evans won nine modified titles during a 13-year span - the first driver inducted not to compete in NASCAR's premier series. This is one of the most entertaining practice sessions I've watched. Not because of the on-track activity but just the commentary. Sadly Darrell Waltrip, celebrating his 25th anniversary in the sport, suffered his first ever DNQ. He stuck around after the Busch race to call happy hour. Offering up some gems about the RYR cars mysteriously catching fire when they need to pull out a backup. He also noted "When I would tell my engine builder the motor was slow he'd say deal with it.. you know what that means... go out and clutch it down the backstretch and blow it to pieces then come back and say it's really slow now. Oh yeah.. only do it if you're driving for someone else." They had some nice interviews with he and the drivers after the session and a nice tribute to his 25 years at Charlotte that left him in tears. His humor in this broadcast is something that seems to be lacking these days. Also the way Ken Squire described the sport in an almost majestic way. Now it's so easy women and children can do it. Classic NASCAR tv.

Jug Band Music (1972) When I made this film I was working on a TV series called "Friends of Man" about our friends in the "Animal Kingdom". I had been in the Original Sloth Band in an earlier incarnation (that's me with the blue bag on my head), and wanted to make an "ironic" documentary. In the 1970's you had to have taken English 301 to know what irony was. Charlie Owen wrote the narration with irony in mind. I am afraid it did not please all the Sloth Banders. TVO bought a license and showed the Mariposa scenes for years as a between-program filler.
