Getter Robo es un cómic japonés (Manga) creado por Ken Ishikawa. En un principio, el autor Go Nagai (Mazinger Z, Devilman...) iba a hacerse cargo de dicho cómic pero, debido al trabajo que ya tenía con otras series, el trabajo que le suponía la recién inaugurada Dynamic y el interés que despertó esta serie en Ken, hizo que este dejara el trabajo. El cómic original se caracteriza por una gran violencia gráfica para una serie que iba a ir dirigida a un publico infantil en un principio, viose por esto obligada a ser dirigida a otro tipo de publico más adulto. En 1974 vería la luz el primer tomo de Getter Robo, dejando incandentes algunas innovaciones narrativas nunca vistas en el manga, así como unos personajes totalmente originales. Más tarde, en 1975, Getter Robo G continuaría la historia para 20 años más tarde ser continuada por Getter Robo Go, en 1991, Shin Getter Robo en 1998 y Getter Robo Ark en 2003. La saga quedaría inconclusa con el fallecimiento de Ken Ishikawaa el 15 de noviembre de 2006. Esta serie también cuenta con varias adaptaciones a la pantalla comoo son: Getter Robo (1974), Getter Robo G (1975), Getter Robo Go (1991), Change! Shin Getter Robo: Sekai no Hi (1998), Shin Getter Robo Vs. Neo Getter Robo (2000) y New Getter Robo (2004). The success of the show made Downey a pop culture celebrity, leading to an appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1988, WrestleMania V in 1989 in which he traded insults with Roddy Piper and Brother Love on Piper's Pit, and later roles in movies such as Predator 2 and Revenge of the Nerds III: The Next Generation. He was also cast in several television roles, often playing tabloid TV hosts or other obnoxious media types. In 1988, Downey recorded an album of songs based on his show, entitled Morton Downey Jr Sings (released in 1989).[8] The album's only single, "Zip It!" (a catch-phrase from the TV show, used to quiet an irate guest), became a surprise hit on some college radio stations. Over the course of the 1988-89 television season, his TV show suffered a decline in viewership, resulting in many markets downgrading its time slot; even flagship station WWOR moved Downey's program from its original 9:00 PM slot to 11:30 PM in January 1989, where it was followed by the then-new Arsenio Hall Show. However, following Hall's strong early ratings, the two series swapped time slots several weeks later, thus relegating Downey to 12:30 AM in the number-one television market.
