One of television's most rightly revered series, The Twilight Zone (CBS, 1959-64) stands as the role model for TV anthologies. Its trenchant psychological/fantasy and sci-fi parables explore humanity's hopes, despairs, prides and prejudices in metaphoric ways conventional drama cannot.Creator Rod Serling wrote the majority of the scripts, and produced those of such now-legendary writers as Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont. Picking out 20 favorites from this great series is like looking for a needle in a haystack as the quality of so many of the episodes are beyond reproach. Hence, my choices had to do with dramatic quality, depth of meaning of each story as well as how often I could go back to an episode and just watch it through. Not surprisingly, Serling needed some outstanding music for his opening sequence as well as the first episode of the series. Who other than Bernard Herrmann would one choose as he was no stranger to fantasy and science fiction films not to mention some of the best dramatic scores of the last century. He composed the main and end titles for the first season, an full scores for at least 4 or five episodes in the first season. He subsequently wrote 2 updated main titles but unfortunately, by the time the 2nd. season rolled around, his work was replaced by the now conventional music that we know of which was written by Maurice Constant."Walking Distance" is arguably, Bernard Herrmann's finest television work.The recording here is by Joel McNeely.
